He is survived by: his parent Julia Bunch Matthews; his sons, James E. Matthews, Jr. (Susan) of Seneca, David Matthews (Jennifer) of Charleston and Steve Matthews (Charles Fallis) of Atlanta, GA; his grandchildren, Susan Carey Nystrom, Paige Wolfe, Megan Hightower (Travis) and Spenser Matthews; and his great grandchild James Nystrom.
