He was predeceased by: his parents, William Paul Merritt and Mary Dilworth Merrritt; his wife Myrtice McRae Merritt; his son Dennis Merritt; and his siblings, Lurie Hewett and Jack Paul Merritt.
He is survived by: his children, Barbara L. Granger, Lawrence A. Merritt and William D. Merritt, Jr.; and his sister-in-law Carol Merritt of James Island, SC.. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; many loved nieces and nephews.
