He is survived by: his wife Phyllis Sue Mathews; his children, Aaron Thomas Mathews (Lauren Owings Mathews) and Sarah Elizabeth Mathews; his granddaughters, Emma Anderson Mathews, Anne Thomas Mathews and Nora Grace Mathews; and his pets, Archer and Lana.

A graveside service was held on Friday, November 15th 2024 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at the Rumph Cemetery. A memorial service was held on Saturday, November 16th 2024 at 11:00 AM at the Harbor View Presbyterian Church (900 Harbor View Rd, Charleston, SC 29412).
