He was predeceased by: his parents, Lois Reid Tate and George W. Tate, Sr.; his wife Lillie Smith Tate; his son Martin Luther Smith; his grandson Jonathan Smith; his grandparents, Hayes "Pal" Reid, Ida Reid, Charlie Tate and Henrietta Tate; his siblings, Reverend Marvin Tate, George W. "Ray" Tate, Jr., Leon Tate, Georgeanna Logan, Bettie Knight, Bonnie Fludd and Mary Magdalene Tate; his parents-in-law, K. B. Smith and Eunice "Fat" Littlejohn Smith; and his brothers-in-law, L. D. Smith and Curtis Smith.
He is survived by: his daughters, Janice Smith of Greensboro and Kabie Lutina Tate Massey (Thomas, Jr.) of Spartanburg; his grandchildren, Travis Epps of Gaffney, Master Thomas E. Massey, III of Spartanburg, Master Tate Luther Massey of Spartanburg, Lola Smith of Gaffney, Shanelle Smith of Charlotte and Jasmine Hagood of Greensboro; his sister Ida McCaw of Sharon; his siblings-in-law, Fannie Rodgers (James) of Dallas, Mary Jo Tate of Blacksburg, Sandra Smith of Gaffney, Michael B. Smith (Dora) of Gaffney, Joseph Littlejohn of Gaffney and Kurt Littlejohn (Lanette) of Gaffney; and also Kabie Lutina Tate (Thomas, Jr.). He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
