He was predeceased by: his parents, William Henry and Mamie Waters Smith; his wife Iris LaRue Grantham Smith; and his siblings, Leona Smith Laney, Mary B Smith Thrower, William J. Smith (Jake) and James Alvin Smith.
He is survived by: his children, Howard N. Smith, Jr. (Susan), Kevin L. Smith (Clay Burnette), Vincent D. Smith (Tori), Patricia N. Anderson (Clay) and Charles E. Smith (Allison); his grandchildren, Michael Smith (Vinitha), Justin Smith, Chad Smith, Joshua Smith, Brice Anderson, Zachary Anderson, Julianna Smith and Layton Smith; and his great grandchild Grantham Smith.
