He was predeceased by: his parents, William James and Rebecca James (Barondon). He is survived by: his wife Nancy M. James (Conte); and his sister Katherine Carter. He is also survived by ses his wife, he leaves a son and two daughters; and seven grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Prout School, Michael D. James Memorial Scholarship.
