He was predeceased by: his brother Chen Zhu-De (John); and his grandson Tobias Hong-Ru Montlake. He is survived by: his wife Wendy; his family Wendy; his children, William of Providence and Jennifer (Simon Montlake); his grandson Sylvester Bo-Ru Montlake of Cambridge; and his siblings, Sylvia Jow of Potomac, Nicholas Chen of Bethesda, Maryland., Chen Xiaoyan of Kunming and Chen Huaiwen of Hainan Island.
