He was predeceased by: his wife Rose Marie Chopy (Toomey); and his sister Anna Chopy. He is survived by: his son Joseph Chopy Jr. (Colleen) of South Kingstown; his brother Norman Chopy (Hope) of Narraganset; his grandchildren, Katelyn Chopy-Fox (Andrew), Ryan Chopy (Michelle Badolto) and Jillian Chopy; his great grandchildren, Arlo, Jude Fox and Eleanor Chopy; and his nephews, Alan and David Chopy.
