Rory Budlong wrote a sympathy message

“I go way back with John - the mid 1960's at Roger Williams J. H school. He always called me Rock (not my real name). John was a terrific athlete - I played baseball and basketball with him and Al his next-door neighbor. He was generous (used to borrow his car all the time) and happy-go-lucky. We used to hang out with John at the Lenox in our care-free days. I hadn't seen seen John in many years but I remember him as a great guy. God bless John and his family, your friend, Rock.”
