He was predeceased by: his son-in-law Kim Whitacre; and his brothers, Dale and Robert. He is survived by: his wife Rita J. Smeltzer (Topper); his children, Connie Whitacre and Wayne "Butch" E. Smeltzer, Jr. (Tana); his grandchildren, Chelyna, Jacob, Zachary and Brandon; his great grandchildren, Blake, Cleo and Samuel; and his sister Karen Burd.
