He is survived by: his wife Mary Gillis (Canavan); his daughter Dr. Tiffany Gillis Newswanger (Jestyn Newswanger); his grandchildren, Noah Newswanger, Peyton Newswanger and Delaney Newswanger; his siblings, David Gillis of Edgewater, Florida, Gary Gillis (Susan) of Midlothian, Virginia and Barbara Burns; his brother-in-law Pat Canavan (Marcie) of Johns Creek, Georgia; and his grandfather Notre Dame. He is also survived by cousins, nieces and nephews.
