He was predeceased by: his parents, Milton Merle and Ethel Merle (Gindelberger); his wife Marilyn (Speicher); and his daughters, Brenda and Beverly.

He is survived by: his children, Robert Jr., Douglas, Barbara and Brian; and his sister Laverne. He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
