He was predeceased by: his parents, Alfred C. Thiel and Anna Kratz Thiel; and his siblings, Alfred, Louis Thiel, Katherine Kwarcinski, Elizabeth Gallagher and Martina Augustine.

He is survived by: his wife Phyllis Walton Thiel; his daughter Stefanie Rybitski (William W.); his grandchildren, Sarah Kotula (Scott) and Nicholas Rybitski (Rachael); his great grandchild Willow Kotula; and his sister Clee Skolnick of Islin, NJ.. He is also survived by nieces and nephews.
