He was predeceased by: his parents, Sara McCabe and James Smith; and his sister Joan Reese. He is survived by: his son James Smith (Minnie); his grandchildren, Nicholas and Samantha; his brother-in-law Bill Reese; his nieces, Debra Pesotski (Ed) and Sharon Segeda (Tom); his great-nephews, Eddie, Jeffrey, Billy Pesotski and Tommy Segeda; his great-niece Kelly Segeda; and also Liliana Nesbitt Segeda.
