He was predeceased by: his parents, Pearl Blose Ashner Whiteman and Donald Ashner; his son John Jr.; and his brother Ronald. He is survived by: his wife Grace Visnosky; his children, Suzanne Rutkowski (James) and Michael (Jeff); his granddaughters, Jennifer Sopak (Harold) and Amber Rutkowski; his great grandchild Hunter Sopak; his siblings, Gregory Whiteman and Linda Bottcher (Robert); and his sister-in-law Margo Ashner. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews.

Memorials: In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the church or to a charity of one's choice in the loving memory of John.
