Sue passed away after a characteristically courageous battle with lung cancer. On their first vacation after a decade of home building and parenting four children, Sue and Bob Smiley traveled to the Virgin Islands and discovered Scuba diving. It was the first of many exotic places they would visit. Both were soon certified by professional diver Howard Klein, who became a lifelong friend and sometime partner until his death. All were members of the Pittsburgh Explorer's Club. At a time when SCUBA was largely viewed as a macho man-sport, Sue Smiley —5'3", 120 lbs.— took no guff and quickly became an exceptional leader and instructor.
