He was predeceased by: his parents, William R. Bates, and Sarah Bates, Sr. (Snyder); and his brothers, Gerald and Kenneth Bates. He is survived by: his sons, William R. Bates, III (Hannah), Chuck Dean (Michelle) of Jefferson and Michael Bates (Erin Stoll) of Waynesburg; his grandchildren, Theo, Brant, Noah, Maggie Bates, Dustin, Chelsea and Ike Dean; and his siblings, Barbara Ankrom (Bill) of Jefferson, Bob Bates (Pat) of Jefferson and Patti Ross (Hubert) of Wind Ridge. He is also survived by four great grandchildren.
