He was predeceased by: his parents, Kenneth G. Smith and Madeline G. Smith (Tosten); and his brother Kenneth Hoover. He is survived by: his close friend Gloria Hayre; his sons, Mark Smith of Greencastle and Allen Smith of Dover, PA; and his siblings, Grace Anderson of Georgia, Victoria Butler of Waynesboro, Janet Yeager of Waynesboro, Ralph Hoover of Florida, Crystal Knoll of Chambersburg, Joseph Smith of Fairfield, Lisa Spoonhour of South Mountain and Gerald "Tyke" Smith of Waynesboro. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
