He was predeceased by: his parents, Philip Mattern and Zilpha Mattern; his sister Ruth Muncatchy (Mattern); and his former wife Nancy M. Jack. He is survived by: his wife Luella M. Mattern (Burger); his children, James P. Mattern Jr. (Mira), Jack Mattern (Julia) and Karen Summers (Mattern); and his stepchildren, Jeff Burger (Misa), Gary Burger (Linda) and Kirby Burger (Jim Sitter). He is also survived by numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren.
