He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Gates and Pauline Gates (Barnhart); his son Lucas E. Gates; and his siblings, Sam Gates, John Gates, Lorraine Bard, Miriam Provard, Helen Stoops and Francis Bricker.
He is survived by: his wife Gwen B Gates (Shimp); his daughters, Mary Beth Gates Herrera and Rebecca Allison; his grandchildren, Rachel Morgan (Chris), Rivka Herrera-McLaughlin (Kevin), Benjamin Herrera, Jacob Herrera and Brenton Allison; his great grandchild Charlie Rae Morgan; and his pets, Manny, Libby and Sammy. He is also survived by nieces, nephews and friends.
