He was predeceased by: his parents, Gary Lee and Ada B. Gates (McCleary); and his sister Amy Sue Gates. He is survived by: his wife Heather L. Gates (Wenger); his son Wyatt E. Gates; and his brother Stephen L. Gates (Wendy) of Fairfield. He is also survived by two nephews; and four nieces.

Visitation was held on Monday, November 18th 2024 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home (50 S Broad St, Waynesboro, PA 17268). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, November 19th 2024 at 11:00 AM at the same location.
