He was predeceased by: his parents, Patrick J. Gilligan and Sarah Gilligan (Devine); his wife Barbara A. Gilligan (Sloane); his son John Gilligan; and his siblings, Patrick M. Gilligan, Bridget Gilligan and Anna Gilligan.
He is survived by: his children, James J. Gilligan Jr. (Carol), Michael J. Gilligan, David P. Gilligan (Ann), Patrick J. Gilligan (Paula), Mary E. Bradley (Jeff) and Catherine A. Gilligan; and his grandchildren, Eric (Amanda), Kimberly (Mike), Carolyn, Kiley, Jamie, Abbey (Bastien), Quinn (Rebecca), Concetta and Shane.
