He was predeceased by: his parents, Amos Hess and Mary M. Eshleman Hess; his grandson Timothy Hess; and his siblings, Walter, David Hess, Ruth Hess, Suey Hammer, Catherine Good, Grace Groff, Helen Craul and Ida Hostetter.
He is survived by: his children, Melvin E. (Wendy S. Mays), Linda M. Hess of Conestoga, Patricia A. Young of Millersville and Mary H. Jacoby of Conestoga. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.
