She was predeceased by: her adoptive father Bernard Birckett; her son-in-law William L. Mattis, III; and her granddaughter Genevieve R. Griest. She is survived by: her husband Steven Howard; her daughter Stephanie B. Mattis (William P. Griest); her granddaughters, Emma, Elizabeth and Billie; her siblings, Alicia, Duane, Bernard Jr. and Steven; and her friends, Sharon Williams, Patty Fattah, Karen Case and Bob Mosley.
In lieu of flowers, Gwendolyn's family suggests that donations be made in her name to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
