He was predeceased by: his parents, Christopher Sweeney and Theresa Sweeney (Bradley); his former wife Elsie Sweeney (Martin); his son Martin Sweeney; his brother Christopher Sweeney; his stepson Daniel Dougherty; and his brother-in-law Charles Martin.
He is survived by: his wife Mary Lou Sweeney (Dougherty); his children, Joseph J. Sweeney, Jr. (Joan) and Karen Koussis (Greg); his stepdaughters, Colleen Scelsa (Michael) and Karen Strazdus (Steve); and his grandsons, Damien Koussis and Nicholas Koussis. He is also survived by nine step-grandchildren, and two step-great grandchildren.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Joseph Sweeney's memory may be made to the St. James Alumni Association Scholarship Fund, 1499 E. 9th St., Eddystone, PA 19022.
