He is survived by: his parents, Lila Grates (Thomas) of Brackenridge and Thomas A. Grates, IV (Robin) of New Kensington; his wife Tracy L. Grates (Smith); his children, Thomas A. Grates, VI of Columbus, OH, Alexis A. Kwalick (Matthew) of Kennedy Twp and John A. Hutchens of Tarentum; his pets, Odin and Freya; and his sisters, Tracy L. Gustafson (William) of Natrona Heights and Sandy Medred of Kiski Twp.

In lieu of flowers, family suggests contributions to the Shriner's organization or Ride For Homeless Vets.
