He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph Bowers and Eva Leidinger (Smellowsky); and his daughter Christine "Tina" Hartz. He is survived by: his wife Brenda D. Smellowsky (Souders); his daughters, Michele Klobosits (Steve), Cheryl "Sherry" Carter (late John), Tammy Sword (Joe), Melissa Shaffer (Brian) and Cathy Van Zile (Paul); and his siblings, Peggy Hercek, Cindy Klein, James Bowers and Frank Bowers (Sharon). He is also survived by 9 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren.
