He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred R. Whitesell and Jean Hannis Whitesell; and his brother Fred Whitesell, Jr. (Lenore Cragle Frazier). He is survived by: his children, Matthew VanGorder of Dallas, Chris VanGorder of Dallas and Ruth Whitesell (Greg) of Wilkes-Barre; his siblings, Carol Grabowski of Berwick, Leon Whitesell (Lavonna) of Oklahoma City, OK, Anne Britt (Richard) of Sweet Valley, John Whitesell (Eileen) of Haskell, OK, Alice Temple of Berwick and Janet Hartzel (Randy) of Nescopeck; and his grandchildren, Matthew, Alyssa, Casey and Delilah. He is also survived by several nieces nephews and cousins.
