He was predeceased by: his parents, Attorney George Shafer II and Viola Shafer (Comstock); his sister Gloria Randolph; his niece Ann Bryan; and his siblings-in-law, Margaret E. Bruns and Russell J. Johnson.

He is survived by: his wife Joan (Jenney); his sons, Gregory Scott Shafer (Kathy) of Lexington, KY and George Garrison Shafer IV of Fort Pierce, FL; his grandchildren, Matthew Garrison Shafer (Leigh Beth) and Ali Shafer Grise (Alex); his great grandchildren, Noah Shafer and Levi Grise; his niece Jan Randolph; and his sister-in-law Kay Lennon (Jimmy).

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Monroe County Historical Association or Lehigh Valley Hospice-Pocono.
