He is survived by: his wife Fang-Mei Chu; and his daughters, Karen and Emily Chu. He is also survived by one sister and two brothers.

“Chao was a noble soul and I am grateful that I got to know him. I miss him frequently. We had a few students that we jointly advised and I always enjoyed meeting him at student proposal presentations and defenses. It is hard to believe that it is almost a year since he left us. My heartfelt sympathies to his family. May he be at peace.”
