William A. Smith Sr. Obituary

William A. Smith, Sr. 91, of Pine Glen, passed away on Friday, March 15, 2024, at Heritage Springs Memory Care in Muncy, PA. Born on March 8, 1933, in Coaldale, PA, he was the son of the late Francis J. and Helen P. (Behun) Smith.

Upon graduation from Tamaqua Senior High School, in 1950, he held various jobs. With the outbreak of the Korean War, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving on board the heavy cruiser, USS Columbus (CA-74) until his honorable discharge in 1956. He earned the rank of YN3 and received the Navy Occupations Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal for his years of service.

In 1957, he entered the Pennsylvania State Police Academy in Hershey, PA and upon graduation from training school, he was assigned to Troop G in Hollidaysburg, PA, serving at various stations until his retirement in 1983. He then became employed with the Centre County Sheriff's Department and prior to that, he was working at FedEx for a short time.

William was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing, canoeing, and trapping, being proficient at coyote trapping.

William is survived by his two daughters, Renee M. Rager and her husband, Charles, of Muncy and Ramona M. Smith of Pittsburgh and by three grandchildren: Amanda Smith of Philipsburg, William Smith III (Samantha) of Port Matilda, and Kristina Smith (Alex) of State College; one great granddaughter, Lauren Williams of Philipsburg; longtime companion, Anne Evans of Ashland, PA, and one sister, Joan Currens and her husband, Joe, of Indiana.

Along with his parents, William was preceded in death by two sons: Douglas S. Smith and William A. Smith, Jr. and a sister, Irene Emerich.

There will be a viewing on Friday, March 22, 2024, from 2-4pm followed by full military honors accorded at the Daughenbaugh Funeral Home, Inc, 106 W. Sycamore St. Snow Shoe.
