He was predeceased by: his parents, Samuel Sappington Magness and Helen Clark (Coale); his wife Barbara Swain Magness; his son David A. Magness; and his siblings, Irene Peeples, Henry, Timothy, Vernon, William and Samuel.
He is survived by: his children, Catherine M. Young (Edward Young) of Jarrettsville, MD, Charles Reed Magness, Jr. (Skip) of Crownsville, MD and Mark C. Magness of Bel Air, MD; his grandchildren, Brad, Brian Young, Philip, Jenna, Sean, Gabrielle and Charles Magness; and his great grandchildren, Brantley and William. He is also survived by his children and grandchildren.
