He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Gathers and Anna Ross Gathers; his former wife Helen Cogar; his spouse A. Marlene Lynam; his brother Donald Gathers (Billy); his stepmother Irene Gathers; his stepbrother Norman Vail (Barbara Vail); and his son Timothy Gathers.
He is survived by: his daughters, Kimberly Wells (Rick) and Candi Shirey (Tom) of Strattanville; his grandchildren, Tabitha Lines (Gregg) of Dubois, Angela Stasiowski (Shaun) of Dubois, Jeremy Godfrey, Timothy Gathers, Susan Beck, Jamie Wells, Betsy Smith (Joey), Gretchen Wells, Ashley Hill (Allen) of Shippenville, Bethany Shirey of Strattanville, Colton Shirey of Strattanville, Hannah Shirey of Strattanville and Hayley Shirey of Strattanville; and his stepsiblings, Donald Vail and Carol Vail. He is also survived by nine step-grandchildren; and 3 step great-grand children.
