He was like a big brother... " - Kathi Smolkowicz View Sign Frank E. Macey, 85, of Shillington, passed away during the evening hours of Monday, August 6, 2018, in his residence surrounded by his loving family. Frank was predeceased by his wife of 32 years, Stella I. (Dybalski) Macey, on September 10, 2015. Born in Reading, he was a son of the late Emerick and Helen (Vanek) Macey. Frank is survived by his loving daughter, Susan L. Macey, Esq. and her husband, Matthew G. Parsell, of Denver, Colorado. Also surviving are a granddaughter, Macey L. Henderson, Ph.D, of Baltimore, Md. Frank is also survived by several nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a sister, Helen B. (Macey) Reinig. Frank was a 1950 graduate of Reading Central Catholic High School and a 1953 graduate of the Wyomissing Polytechnical Institute. He started his career at the Textile Machine Works and later Western Electric as a toolmaker from 1954 to 1966. Frank retired from Continental Can and Sonoco Fiber Drum Co. as plant supervisor after 23 years of employment in 1989. Frank was a faithful parishioner of Sts. Cyril and Methodius Roman Catholic Church, Reading where he served as a lector for over 40 years. Frank was very proud of his Slovak heritage, he was a lifetime member of the Slovak Catholic Sokol, he served as national officer for 24 years in the sports dept. He was awarded the National Supreme Officer award in 1990. He also served for over 25 years as Group Sports Director with his teams capturing six consecutive National Flags at their International Meets. Locally, Frank promoted male and female gymnasts, many of whom achieved state and national prominence. At the local level at the Reading Sokol Club, he served as club president, treasurer and director for both the Home Association and Lodge. Frank was a driving force in the building of the new Reading Sokol Club in 2011. Frank was also a life member of the Slovak Catholic Federation, 18th Ward Demmies and the Kenhorst and Oakbrook Fire Companies. He was also a member of the Polish Falcons and Knights of Columbus #793. Frank's smile and upbeat attitude will be sadly missed. Relatives and friends may extend their sympathy and respects to the family on Thursday, August 9, 2018, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Kopicki-Bradley Funeral Home Inc., 239 South Ninth Street, Reading, PA 19602. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 10, 2018, at 9:30 a.m. at The Chapel of Resurrection at Gethsemane Cemetery, 3139 Kutztown Road, Laureldale, PA 19605. Entombment will follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Slovak Catholic Sokols, 411 Crestmont Street, Reading, PA 19611, in memory of Mr. Frank E. Macey.
