He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert C. Sims, Sr. and Mae Sims (Eckrote); his son Robert Edward Sims; his granddaughter Shayla Leigh Bird; and his sister Roberta Dotter.

He is survived by: his wife Robin Sims (Zahay); his daughter April Walters (Brian) of Weatherly; and his grandson Brady Walters.
