He was predeceased by: his sister Mary Dehlinger. He is survived by: his wife Elizabeth "Betty" Carroll (Zappala); his children, Colleen McKenna (David), Joseph Carroll (Kim) and Jennifer Johnson (Nathan); his grandchildren, Arianna, Ryan, Zackary, Luke, Charlie, Rachel and Gracie; his great grandchild Liam; and his sisters, Susan Gleason (Robert) and Joan LaRose (Robert). He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and in-laws.
In lieu of flowers family suggests donating blood in John's honor. He donated over 30 gallons of blood throughout his life.
