He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Oakes and Frances Oakes (Bertha Reyna Oakes); and his son Michael Cortez Oakes. He is survived by: his wife Bertha Reyna Oakes; his children, Melody Kinsel (Randy), Dan Jr., David Oakes (Marcia) and Susan Honicker (Mark); his grandchildren, Jessica Oakes Richter (Matt), Emily Oakes, Hayden Honicker and Peyton Honicker; his brothers, Nelson, Bobby and Ken Oakes; and his pet Cujo.
