He was predeceased by: his parents, John J. Fitzgerald Sr. and Helen Fitzgerald (Walsh); and his son John J. Fitzgerald (Christine). He is survived by: his wife Mary; and his children, Kathleen O'Donnell (Brian), Mary P. Fitzgerald, Eileen McMahon (Brian), Diane McCarney (Thomas), Joan Phillips (Fred) and Patrick M. Fitzgerald.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Teresa of Calcutta Parish in John's name.
