He was predeceased by: his parents, Raymond S. Hafer and Ester Mae Hafer (Resh); his wife Jean Hafer (Fisher); his son J. Carl Hafer Jr.; his grandsons, J. Carl Hafer III, Scot and Stanley Borascius; and his siblings, Russel Hafer, Anna Grube and Wilhelmena Stauffer.
He is survived by: his children, Ester Jean Borascius (Stanley) of Schnecksville, Joseph "Ted" Theodore Hafer (Bernadette) of Auburn and Gregory S. Hafer (Elaine) of Pottsville; his daughter-in-law JoAnn Hafer (Potosky) of Tamaqua; his grandchildren, Robert Borascius, Joseph Hafer, Lance Hafer, Dean Hafer, Bernadette Trostle, Brandon Hafer and Alexander Hafer; and his siblings, Doris Ney, Betty Hafer, Ralph and Paul Hafer. He is also survived by 12 great grandchildren; 9 great-great grandchildren.
