He was predeceased by: his parents, George Cooney and Helen Cooney (Franke); and his brothers-in-law, Charles Polak and Edward McDermott. He is survived by: his wife Sue Cooney (Cale); his children, Sherry Helsel (Dan), Tim (Denise Obitz), Michelle Vitez (John) and Don Jr. (Marissa Theroux); his grandchildren, Matthew, Adam Helsel, Carter, Kirstyn, Cameron Vitez, Revis, Aiden, Austin and Brody Cooney; his great grandchildren, Ava and Emma; and his siblings, Marlene Polak, Elaine McDermott, Ron (Charlotte) and Eugene Cooney (Carol). He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
