He was predeceased by: his parents, James B. Atherton and Nancy Atherton (Rasp); his wife Mildred J. Atherton (Coons); and his sons, Clay, Clair and Jerry Atherton.
He is survived by: his close friend Josephine Myers; and his children, Violet Kann (Ronald) of Mercersburg, Teresa Hawbaker (Barry) of Mercersburg, Ruby Atherton of Mercersburg, Tina Niswander (Timothy), Chester Atherton (Joane) of Mercersburg and Perry Atherton (Tammy) of Mercersburg. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 36 great grandchildren, and 11 great great grandchildren.
