He was predeceased by: his parents, John Hiram and Barbara Highlands (McCready); and his brothers, Robert, Bill and Richard.

He is survived by: his wife Barbara J. Highlands (Miller); and his children, John Highlands and Laurel L. Highlands-Nestor (Wade). He is also survived by seven nieces and a nephew.
