He was predeceased by: his parents, Mary Smiley and Peter Smiley; his sisters, Rosemary Chronis (Smiley) and Marlene Allison (Smiley); and his son John Jr..

He is survived by: his children, Susie, Stephen and Joseph; and his grandchildren, Hanna Wesolowski (Zach), Brett Smiley, Jake Smiley (Shelby), Bryn Smiley, Matthew Von Kaenel, Shannon Von Kaenel and Cole Wesolowski.
