He was predeceased by: his parents, Clarence V. Kern, Sr. and Dora Stoner Kern; and his siblings, Henry, Betty Kern and Henrietta Kirkham.

He is survived by: his wife Marlene Buchter; his children, Kim Kern of Akron and Kevin Kern (Kelly) of Fort Mill, SC; his granddaughters, Grace Sutton Kern, Georgia Katherine Kern and Audrey Elizabeth 'Libby' Kern; and his brother Richard Kern of Stevens.
