He was predeceased by: his parents, Raymond William and Emma Matthews (McCartney); his siblings, Raymond Matthews and Joyce Borman; and his aunt Grace McCartney.
He is survived by: his wife Pamela C. Matthews (Lisek); his children, Wayne E. Matthews of Lewistown, Michele K. Conners (Andrew) of Conshohocken, James 'Jay V. Bender Jr. (Alison) of Lewistown, Shawn A. Bender (Latisha) of Arizona and Danielle M. Hartsock (Tobias) of Lewistown; and his sister Diana Foley (Derek) of Texas. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren.
