He was predeceased by: his parents, John Hess and Mildred M. Hess (Bonebrake); his former wife Doris E. Hess (Stumbaugh); his stepson-in-law Clint Payne; and his siblings, Margaret E. Valentine, Louise H. Whitmore, Pauline G. Martin, K. Marie Martin, Joseph Hess, Kenneth Hess and John H. W. Hess, Jr..
He is survived by: his wife Lavonne L. "Vonnie" Jones Hess; his daughter Elaine K. Hess-Strite (Lois) of Chambersburg, PA; his stepchildren, Mickey L. Jones (LuAnne) of McConnellsburg, PA and Sue L. Payne of Manchester, PA; his grandson Joshua Dorand; and his brother Robert L. Hess (Ellen) of Mont Alto, PA. He is also survived by 7 step-grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren.
