He was predeceased by : his father Foster B. Smathers; his stepfather Richard G. Manuell; and his sisters, Kay Stiglitz, Nancy Guthrie and Daneen Servey.

He is survived by : his children, Lisa Brown (Eddie) of Neilltown and Rodney J. "RJ" Smathers, Jr. (Helen Wagner) of Titusville; his grandsons, Travis Wilson (Michelle) of Greenville and Trevor Wilson (Crystal Maxin) of Neilltown; and his great grandchildren, Mackenzie, Trenton Wilson and Zannu Maxin Wilson. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
