He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Jim Sumner and Marguerite Donley Sumner; his siblings, Jeanne (John Letterman), Lena (Floyd Hansen), Beverly (Pete McDowell) and Shirley (Jerry Arnold); his family, Church and Oxford; and his spouse Etha McDowell. He was also cherished by nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
