He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Gilbert A. Schleiden Sr. and Mary Schleiden (Schneider); his wife Joan Schleiden (Gounley); his children, Sharon Souder, Debra Schleiden and Kenneth Schleiden (Terry); his siblings, Mary Garris (James), Jim Schleiden (Susan), Ruth Bonz (late Ron) and Frank Schleiden (Trish); and his grandchildren, Sarah, Danielle, Kyle, Jeffrey, Wesley and Julia. He was also cherished by many nieces and nephews.
