He was predeceased by: his parents, William Mertz and Grace Mertz (Heiser); and his siblings, Robert, Vivian, Billy, Doris and Larry.
He is survived by: his wife Ann Engler (Brooks); his children, Charles Mertz of Trevorton, Tina Mertz-Ladd of Sunbury and Michelle Mertz of Northumberland; and his sisters, Betty Reitz of Winfield and Linda Dibler (Donnie) of Elizabethville. He is also survived by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
